Teen & adult transition, independence

Planning for life after school: work, living, and benefits.

Transition planning helps teens prepare for adult life — further education, work, independent living, and health care. Under IDEA, transition planning becomes part of the IEP for older students.

Autistic adults may also be eligible for vocational rehabilitation services and, depending on individual circumstances, disability benefits.

Things to consider

  • Ask the school about transition services in the IEP.
  • Contact your state vocational rehabilitation agency about employment support.
  • An autism diagnosis does not automatically qualify someone for SSI; eligibility depends on SSA’s criteria.
  • Center the young person’s own goals and preferences.

Who to talk to

The school IEP team, your state vocational rehabilitation agency, and the Social Security Administration.
