In the United States, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) gives eligible children with disabilities the right to a free appropriate public education. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) describes the services and supports a student will receive.
Parents and caregivers are members of the IEP team. You can ask questions, share what you see at home, and request meetings.
Things to consider
- You can request an evaluation for special education services in writing.
- Bring notes about strengths, challenges, and what helps at home.
- Ask how progress on goals will be measured and reported.
- Your state has a parent training and information center; the IDEA site lists contacts.
Who to talk to
Your child’s school or district special education office.
