Safety

Wandering, emergencies, and planning ahead.

If someone is missing or in immediate danger, call 911 right away.

Safety planning can bring peace of mind. Some autistic people may wander or leave safe areas, may not respond to their name in an emergency, or may find interactions with first responders stressful.

Planning ahead — with your household, school, and neighbors — can help everyone respond calmly.

Things to consider

  • Keep a current photo and a short description of communication and sensory needs.
  • Consider door alarms or locks appropriate for your home.
  • Teach and practice safety skills, including water safety, in ways that fit the person.
  • Share key information with school staff and trusted neighbors.
