Communication & AAC awareness

Every person communicates. Learn about the many ways.

Communication is more than speech. Some autistic people speak fluently, some speak sometimes, and some communicate mainly through gestures, writing, pictures, or devices. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) includes all of these tools.

Respecting every form of communication, and assuming a person has something to say, is a foundation of ABMC’s approach — and the heart of our series The Silent Gift.

Things to consider

  • A speech-language pathologist can assess communication and recommend AAC options.
  • Using AAC does not stop speech from developing.
  • Give extra time for responses and accept all forms of communication.

Who to talk to

A speech-language pathologist, through your doctor, school, or early intervention program.
